THE M6 has been shut in one direction after a four-car collision this morning.
It took place on the outside lane of the southbound carriageway at 6.30am, close to junction 21A.
Congestion is already stretching back as far as junction 23 for Haydock in Merseyside.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, where the casualties were treated for minor injuries.
Highways England said in a statement: “Traffic has been temporarily stopped while we tow these vehicles to the hard shoulder.
“We’ll have you moving again as soon as it’s clear. With morning traffic, congestion is currently back to J23 (Haydock).”
Travel updates service Inrix added: “M6 Cheshire southbound – stationary traffic due to all traffic being temporarily held and accident, two cars involved on M6 Southbound from J21A M62 J10 (Croft Interchange) to J21 A57 Manchester Road (Woolston).
“Congestion to J23 (Haydock). Lane three (of three) was closed, until around 7am when traffic was held.
“Vehicles are currently being moved to the hard shoulder.”
Traffic was later released but delays remained of up to an hour.
